By: Diane | Date: Jun 28, 2010 | Sea Turtle eggs relocated from Gulf to Atlantic

A sea turtle egg relocation project has been started in hopes of keeping hatchlings out of the oil that's spreading through Gulf of Mexico.

Henry Cabbage of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they have started digging up sea turtle eggs in nests in Florida's Panhandle.

The eggs are being moved to a secure facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where the turtles will be released in the Atlantic Ocean once they're hatched. Cabbage said the fear with leaving the eggs on the Gulf Coast is "the turtles wil ride the current into the oil."

The eggs will be collected three times a week from now until November.

Laurel, so nice to see little Marshall out there already. I think you should sew a tiny loggerhead patch on his turtle shirt for everyone he finds.

By: Laurel | Date: Jun 28, 2010 | Marshall's first nest

Thanks for pitching in on Sunday, everyone! It was great to see everyone yesterday morning and introduce my son, Marshall to turtle patrols. We patrolled zone 3, and then went down to help with one of the crawls in zone 4. Our first nest this season was #60 in zone 4 and we left it in situ. Thanks to the Wrights, and John Dittmer and friends for helping!

By: mommakaren | Date: Jun 27, 2010 | information

To all day leaders and team members we must monitor the nest as we are walking our zones not on the way back. nest #2 reaches 45 days June 29 and the hatching season starts. we are looking at 50 t0 55 days beacuse of the warm weather. Look for the wonderful tracks that we look for each year to see how well we have done. There will be inventory sign up sheets in the radio box for you to sign if you want to continue on your morning patrols to help with the monitoring of the nest for the season and we still have a long way to go befor our mother turtles stop laying. so please consider helping. Our season does not end on august 1st. thank you

There were 3 nests today. and several false crawls. 2 nest were found in zone 4 and 1 in zone 6. all are now in zone 4. DNR flew over today as they usually do on sunday's just wave.

By: Diane | Date: Jun 27, 2010 | Nests in the usual places

Hmmm, my note disappeared, so I'll try again. Nothing on sections 1/2 my group patrolled today, but we heard about a couple of crawls farther south. When we were pretty sure 1 and 2 were clear, Charlie headed down to help probe. Based on the number, they found nests, but someone else will have to fill you in.

By: MaryAnn Waldrop | Date: Jun 26, 2010 | NUMBER 57!

A beautiful crawl and nest in zone 4 this morning- #57. The nest was moved to the dune area in zone 4, between the last two groins.

By: Ardena | Date: Jun 26, 2010 | trash on the beach

In zone 3 today we found nothing but lots of trash. The pesky raccoons had patrolled all the nests ahead of us but they didn't disturb anything this time. Can't say the same about ghost crabs, who had tunneled into three nests. Among the trash: chairs, towel, shirt, book, several flip-flops, a few lost toys, and COUNTLESS cigarette butts.

nest 54 zone 4 , nest 55 zone 2, nest 56 zone 3.

By: Diane | Date: Jun 25, 2010 | Hoodoo?

Heard that last year but couldn't find anything online about a Gullah or Voodoo traditional Spring ceremony. Doesn't really fit Wiccan either, but it was close.

By: when "false " crawl becomes a nest | Date: Jun 24, 2010 | voila' nest 53

crawl in zone 3 was nest 53 . head ranger Jeff Cucinella and the Harrells ( light house host and fellow fohi turtlers) saw her on the beach wed night at 930 . an it aint wicca its voo doo . very very bad juju to mess with it .
FYI - we got nest 53 on the fourth of July last year.

By: Diane | Date: Jun 24, 2010 | Wicca, perhaps?

Karen, we had the same items last year on the beach on a Sunday. It's a couple days late to have anything to do with the summer solstice but maybe whoever does it can't get to the beach on the right night.

By: Karen M | Date: Jun 24, 2010 | Two false crawls and watermelon

Thursday's team had one false crawl in zone 3 and one just into zone 5 from 4 near a cabin. We also found a circle of watermelons, coconuts, and bananas in zone 4 - an offering to the gods ? The deer and raccoons seemed to like them based on the number of tracks!

By: Gretchen | Date: Jun 23, 2010 | Nests 51 & 52

Wednesday is working hard to catch up to the rest of the week. This a.m. a nest was found in Zone 3 just North of the S. Beach bath house. Unfortunately the team of Tim & Frances Bruner, and Carol & Alan Welch had to clean up after a hungry raccoon. The thief had feasted on 40 eggs; 79 were saved and relocated a little further up the beach.

Meanwhile, Frances Bruner & I walked the rest of the Zone and found another nest. We probed and dug, but no luck until Tim came along and found the nest with no problem. It was left in situ.
